Cinema Casualties is a not-for-profit series dedicated to screening trashy, audience-friendly old-school horror movies, which seeks to bring people together as a celebration of the communal joy inherent in the film-going experience specific to the genre. The series has been running since July of 2015, mostly at ArtsRiot (with two screenings taking place at Main Street Landing Film House), and is going into its 18th screening with “C.H.U.D.”

1980’s horror had a particularly strong fixation of New York City. From cult classics (“Alligator,” “Basket Case,” “Q: The Winged Serpent”) to mainstream franchise fare (“Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan) from indie freak-outs (“Street Trash,” “Frankenhooker”) to major studio productions (“Ghostbusters”) and Euro-sleaze imports (“New York Ripper”) somethingabout the pre-Giuliana Big Apple resonated with the horror genre. One of the most beloved of these films is the ever-enjoyable slice of mutant mayhem entitled “C.H.U.D.” Short for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, “C.H.U.D.” reveals the beating heart of the city, warts and all, with its story about the chaos that erupts when the government attempts to push its secrets down to where society can’t see them. “C.H.U.D.” is a pro production with the heart of a B-flick, and as a result it has a very audience-friendly combination of solid pacing, a great collection of character actors, exceedingly watchable cinematography and loads of sleazy, kitschy fun.
