Ideas on Tap: Not Just a Musical: The Book of Mormon as Text

Ideas on Tap: Not Just a Musical: The Book of Mormon as Text
7:00PM

The Book of Mormon inspired controversy even before its first publication in 1830. To believers, it is an ancient Christian scripture, discovered and translated by Joseph Smith, Jr., originally from Vermont, following a divine revelation. That belief has made the book the foundation of the most successful religious movement with American roots to date. So what, exactly, is The Book of Mormon about? What stories does it tell? And what makes it such a compelling and divisive text?

Join UVM literature professor Elizabeth Fenton for an introduction to The Book of Mormon and a discussion of its (very complicated) structure and plot-lines, as well as its history. Our aim will not be to assess the book’s truth claims but rather to explore its history and assess its place within the canon of American literature.
