Created in 1923, the Walt Disney Company is now the second largest media conglomerate in the world after Comcast. From the global celebrity of Mickey Mouse that began in the Great Depression to the current popularity of the Disney princesses, the Disney studios have had a significant impact on the lives of children worldwide. What does it mean to “grow up” with Disney? What impact has Disney had in the last 90+ years on the evolution of childhood, modes of play, the toy industry, and the impact of mass media on children?

With Sarah Nilsen, UVM Associate Professor and Program Director of the Film & Television Studies Department.

Presented in partnership with the University of Vermont’s Humanities Center.
