An evening with Grundlefunk & friends to Protect Bears Ears:
Friday, August 3rd, 2018 ArtsRiot will host a fundraiser for the legal defense funds of five Tribal Nations, the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, the Ute Mountain Ute, and the Uintah & Ouray Ute in their fight to preserve the Bears Ears National Monument. The Bears Ears Monument was signed into law by President Obama in 2016 and contained over 1.3 million acres. This marked a seminal moment in the relations between the United States government and sovereign Tribal Nations, where Indigenous peoples acquired equivalent authority in the management and preservation of federal lands which contain religious and cultural importance. The Trump administration has illegally shrunk the monument by 85%, a right not granted to the Executive Branch under the American Antiquities Act of 1906. Nearly ten years of collaborative research documented a landscape of immense significance, where tribes recorded more than 100,000 heritage sites. The Bears Ears Monument must be protected and the agreement between the United States and the tribal coalition honored. This landscapes’ rich history and natural beauty cannot be plundered for resource extraction by the highest bidder and added to the long list of broken promises of the United States government to Native American nations. Join Grundlefunk and friends standing with the five tribal nations in their legal fight to defend the sacred and protect the Bears Ears National Monument.
