Ideas on Tap: Vandals, Vigilantes, or Virtuosos? The History and Power of Street Art

Street art is one of the most popular and best-selling genres of art today. Ironically, many works of street art critique the wealthy and powerful—the very patrons of this newly collectible art. Compounding the irony, governments and property owners nearly outspend the collectors in their attempts to prevent and remove unsanctioned images from their walls.

As we explore the transgressive practices of street artists, Champlain College Professor David Mills will confront questions about the ownership and control of public places, about power and difference in the imagescape of the city, and about the nature, value, and place of art in society.
