The “cloud” exists not in the sky, but on the ground, and underground, in data centers that use electricity around the clock. There are three million data centers in the U.S. alone. Every digital file we save, send, or backup has a carbon footprint and a physical footprint that we should be aware of if we are to understand our digital world and all its ramifications.
